I have been on the PBMPRD Board since May 2020. In that time, we’ve made a lot of

positive changes and expanded the services the District provides. We have some very

substantial projects and plans to put into place in the next couple of years and I would like

to be a part of that, so I am running for another term to do so.

In addition to the PBMPRD, I was on the Battlement Mesa Metropolitan District board for 6

years (2013 – 2019) and I have been on the Garfield 16 School Board since 2016.

My current job is that of Community and Economic Development Director for the Town of

Parachute (since January of 2024). Prior to that I was the Assistant Manager of the

BMMD/BMSA (February 2020 – December 2023). I am a graduate of Grand Valley High

School (1983) and have a BA in Economics from the University of New Mexico.

I first moved to Parachute in 1976, prior to the existence of Battlement Mesa, because my

father got a job in the Occidental Oil Shale Mine in DeBeque. I left for 28 years right after

high school graduation in 1983 and moved back to the area in 2011.

I currently live in Battlement Mesa. In my free time I fly fish, golf, hunt and do a lot of yard

work. I was raised in and by this community and I’m taking every opportunity to pay it back

and make it a great place to live.

Shandice Churchill

Hi, my name is Shandice Churchill. I grew up in Battlement Mesa, graduated from

Grand Valley High School, and am raising my three beautiful children here with

my husband, Michael Churchill.

My interest in joining the board began through my involvement in the Parks and

Recreation Master Plan process, which deepened my understanding of the

district’s opportunities and challenges. I aim to facilitate greater transparency,

communication, and involvement with residents to encourage growth that reflects

the needs of our community. I strongly support youth programming and its

success in our area, and I hope to help ensure the overall health and stability of

our parks and recreation facilities, events, and programming.

Professionally, I have worked as a Realtor with Property Professionals on the

Western Slope since 2022. I have taught dance classes in the valley for over 15

years and currently lead a successful dance and acro program at the Grand

Valley Recreation Center.

In addition, I serve as the Chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee for the

Glenwood Springs Association of Realtors and on the Business Advocacy

Advisory Board for the Glenwood Springs Resort Chamber Association, where I

work to support local business growth and community wellness.

Thank you for the opportunity,

Shandice Churchill

Background: I was born and raised on the Southside of Chicago. I am the sixth of seven children and

attended Chicago public schools and then graduated with a Diploma from St. Mary of Nazareth School of

Nursing in 1975. I completed my BSN in 1985 and MSN in 1995 from Northern Illinois University. I have

worked in a variety of clinical settings but primarily as an Emergency Department and Intensive Care

Nurse Educator. Most recently, since moving to Battlement Mesa in 2010, I was an Associate Professor of

Nursing at Colorado Mountain College with instruction in gerontology and pharmacology as my specialty.

Interests: Throughout my life I have participated in outdoor and recreational activities playing volleyball,

softball and swimming at the Chicago city parks and local YMCA. During high school I volunteered as a

tutor and as a “Gym Leader’ which involved helping the athletic instructors. My first job was at the local

YMCA as a locker room attendant.

Currently I enjoy pickleball, hiking, golfing, both downhill and cross-country skiing. Occasionally I do try

to slow down by reading and playing my daily Wordle and joining in Bunco with the local ladies.

Community Involvement: I have been a literacy volunteer both in Illinois and Colorado for four years. I

volunteered as a ‘Collection Counter” and garden helper for the Grand Valley United Methodist Church. I

have served as the Secretary for the Ladies Golf League and now, along with two others, I lead the Grand

Valley Hikers.

Parachute/Battlement Mesa Parks & Recreation Board Interest: I joined the Parks & Recreation Board in

2023 because this affords me the opportunity to blend my interests and desire for expanding recreation

opportunities for community members regardless of age or economic status. I am proud of the team

efforts that the Board and the staff have accomplished thus far, such as Recreation Center

improvements including lighting, painting, furniture, and updated fitness equipment, and an expanded

BM Golf Course restaurant. I look forward to the building of a trail around the Rec Center to Spencer

Parkway and a shade shelter for the Skate & Dog Park. I especially value the community input provided

for our recently approved Master Plan and will work to increase area trails, community building events,

and improved marketing and communication of these offerings.
